Art Place is divided into 8 bays that are 30 ft.x 20 ft. Concrete walls form the bays that allow not only a longer span but also give the advantage of thermal massing benefits as well as the ability to use local materials as to not create a large footprint. Concrete columns are also used to create an advantage of fireproofing throughout the building as well as benefiting the cistern collection pond in a way that concrete is a non porous material and will not allow the flow of water to go through as easily as other materials. The total KIPS for the building is 2215.82. By using a lot of concrete the building becomes immediately heavier and weighed down more, with the use of underground spaces surrounded by concrete we get a high R value of insulation in many spaces, choosing techniques such as evaporative cooling, thermal cooling and heating as well as cistern collection makes this “Art Place” a truly unique environment that encompasses the useful tools determining climate, lighting, temperature and others to make these choices in creating a truly environmental geared building.
